If one assumes that Sister Sledge is the name of a nun, the assumption would be incorrect. Sister Sledge is a female R&B vocal quartet best remembered for the hit single “We Are Family”. The group consisted of sisters Kathy, Debbie, Joni and Kim Sledge. Born and raised in Philadelphia PA to the union of Edwin Sledge and Florez Sledge, the group was given vocal guidance by their grandmother Viola Williams and regularly sang at their family church Williams Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal until forming a band and performing at charity and political events under the name Mrs. Williams Grandchildren. The group recorded several albums before Atlantic Records introduced the group to Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic. The association resulted in the breakthrough album “We Are Family”. The album was an instant smash selling millions and the group performed sold out shows around the world. They went on to record several more albums, but “We Are Family” remains their crowning achievement.
